A weekend at a height of 1km from see level :wayanad

Hi all! last week I had a weekend night party at a home-stay situated in the outskirts of Sultans Bathery of Wayanad. I suggest Wayanad as the place you must visited once befor you die. In fact Suthan Bathery is my home place. Nowadays I work at Kochi (Cochin). another tourist hot spot of Kerala , gods own country. I visit Wayanad fortnightly as my parents live there. But this time there was something special which made me go there. one of my close friends sister is getting married, and all our Bangalore buddies were there . so its kind of a fun filled re-union with my friends. I was expecting tons of fun when i am preparing my back pack for the journey. because they all are high voltage guys. spending time with such guys is like recharging yourself.

I reached Wayanad by Friday midnight, and I was tired because of the long journey I have had through the poor conditions roads of Kerala. It is better to travel in a Jeep or SUV because those are designed to perform well in off road too :).

A phone woke up me in the morning. it was a call from my another close friend Mahesh who is working abroad. he is in a vacation here. we planed for a meet by afternoon. looking at my watch, I came to know that I overslept this  weekend too as i always do. after meeting my homeboys(Mahesh, Jobin and others). I headed towards the Brides home. because the actual celebration happens today ie; the day before marriage.  in Kerala, there is some celebration in  the brides home in the evening before the marriage day. which will long to midnight and will be spiced up by live music and some art-forms too. so it is not advised to miss that yesterday fun.

The Surprise

I thought He would arrange some rooms for us. but He my friend, the brides brother managed to book a lonely cottage for us. we all are surprised to know that, and the cottage was in the middle of a coffee plantation and is isolated from the outer world.

Bangaluru guys were already there. and finished with a bottle of whiskey.( but with the cold of winter evening it didn't worked out well ). after changing we moved toward the brides house. there was a live music session as expected. but most of them are listening to music seated and silently. we are the only ones making the evening "live" by making some noise and shaking a leg with the dance numbers sung by the troop.

the funniest thing happened is we made the serious guys to dance including the brides father.
in our locality the elders will behave like "black cats" till end of the function with stiff body language and a smile sicked in their lips even if the event is handled by some event management firm, they will act like they are doing everything including the chefs job . But as an exception My friends whole family is fun loving. they danced with us without any hesitation.

After the fun we made a move to have even more fun. we had the liquor to cater the needs of all weekend drunkards with us and we are going to enjoy the chillness of hill-station night at its heights.

we started by sharing the news's and happenings of our last few month's life. as the night became darker we started with our drinks. and it was really fun having the caretaker of the homestay Unniyetan AKA Kuttettan Alias Damodharan's company. He suggested us not to marry but enjoy life the fullest before getting trapped in the knot. we were in minimal clothes to experience the chillness at its pure form. and we started singing our vulgar folksinging as we finished with our drinks.

the night was unforgettable for each of us  because, this is once in a lifetime kind of enjoyment my be we will not have a chance to meet like this . the mist may not  be there to chill us in the future because the global warming already started showing up. we might not get time to meet like this because everyone is going back to their own tight work schedule.

But it is sure that we will meet again for breathing the purest air available in south India, to feel the healthiest mist in south India , to feel the Homeliness of the loneliest home-stays of Wayanad , and to see the smile in mother natures beautiful face once again when we friends are meeting .

like somebody said, Yes- we are parting to meet again.

¤ Kanyakumari, The Southernmost Tip of India

Kanyakumari or the Cape Comorin, the southern most tip of peninsular India is sprawled over an area of 1672 sq. km, occupying 1.29% of the total extent of Tamil Nadu. Kanyakumari is also known as Kanniyakumari in Tamil Language. It is the confluence point of three oceans - the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Apart from this, it is also a vital Hindu pilgrim center, renowned for its exotic sunrises and sunsets over the horizon. One of the unique features of Kanyakumari is the multicolored sand found on its beach.

This exquisite land is encircled by majestic hills along with swaying coconut trees and paddy fields. There are also a few elevated patches of red cliffs and some free flowing valleys presenting an eye-pleasing scene. One can also see plains between the m ountainous terrain and the sea - coast, with Temples and Churches standing proudly. Truly, a beautiful way to mark the end of the land of marvelous India.

History of Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari or the Cape Comorin was once known as the Alexandria of the east. A hub of art, culture, civilization, and pilgrimage for years, it is famous for commerce and trade. The architecture of this beautiful beach land is greatly inspired by religions like Islam, Christianity and Jainism. Kanyakumari was ruled by the Cholas, the Cheras, the Pandyas and the Nayaks, all great rulers of south India. The credit for the architectural beauty of the temples found in Kanyakumari goes to these rulers. Kanyakumari was given the name Cape Comorin by the British as it was easier for them to pronounce.

According to a legend Kanya Devi, an avatar of Goddess Parvati, was supposed to wed Lord Shiva. But he did not turn up at the auspicious time and the wedding never took place. Therefore the rice and cereals, which were to be used for the marriage remained uncooked. The stones found here resemble rice and cereals and today one can buy these stones. Native population believes that they are the leftovers of the legendary marriage that could not be solemnized. and the princess Kanya Devi, became a virgin goddess blessing pilgrims and tourists alike.

¤ Attractions At Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari has many tourist attractions luring inn
umerable tourists, well promoted by tourism department of Tamil Nadu. Among the most important are the Kumari Amman or the Kanyakumari Temple, located on the sea shore. It is dedicated to a manifestation of Parvati, the virgin goddess who did penance to obtain Lord Shiva's hand in marriage. There are two rocks reaching out of the ocean,

situated southeast of the Kumari Amman temple. One among these is Sri Padaparai, where the footprints of the virgin goddess are said to be imprinted on the rock. It is said that Swami Vivekananda sat in deep meditation and here one can also find the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial built in 1970. my trip to yelagiri

hi all! this post is about my trip to yelagiri. i visited yelagiri many times because that was the nearest hil lstation to my college. and yelagiri is one of the ideal places for those who loves- trecking. my last trip to yelagiri for watching the paragliding from the highest peeks of yelagiri now check some details about yelagiri

Yelagiri (also spelt Elagiri on some signboards) is a town in Tamil Nadu, a state in the south of India.

Yelagiri, at a height of 920 meters above sea level, stands majestically amidst four mountains. This is a hill station with a salubrious climate prevailing throughout the year so that winters do not keep visitors away. The main inhabitants of the area are the tribals who live in the 14 small villages which comprise Yelagiri. These tribals are engaged in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, etc. - all the occupations of rural hill folk. Their customs and habits, and especially the structure of their houses is unique and attracts a number of tourists to this hill station

How to get there

By car

From Bangalore

Yelagiri is about 150 km from Bangalore and 250 km from Chennai (Madras), good for a four hour bike ride with breaks along the way. Take the NH7 out of Bangalore towards Hosur, turn towards Chennai (onto NH46) at Krish

nagiri and continue until you get just before Vaniyambadi. You can see the Hills from quite a distance (on your right). From a break in the highway that comes approx 2 km after the toll gate, turn right into the underpass road that takes you to Tirupathur. Continue some 5 km and at Ponneri Junction take a left to Yelagiri Hills. The routes are all marked with signboards in English.

From Chennai

Yelagiri is about 258 km from Chennai-Ta

mbaram. Take the Poonamalee High Road out of the city to Ponamalee Town. From Poonamalee, take the Bangalore highway towards Vellore. The distance to Vellore is about 135 km and the route passes through Sriperumbudur, Walajapet and Katpadi. Vellore would be a good place to plan a break, there are a lot

of eating places right on the highway. From Vellore continue on to

Ambur and then towards Vaniyambadi. On the highway about 45 km from the 3 toll station, watch out for a signboard for "Elagiri - 22 kms". Take a left at this exit. Its easy to miss this left and if you overshoot this you would reach the Vaniyambadi toll station in about 1km. Continue on this road (SH18) till you reach Ponneri junction which has Thirupathur straight and Yelagiri on the left. Watch out for this one as it is easy to miss. (On the left, you'll see a big sign board 'Tamilnadu Tourism Department Welcomes You'. Turn left at this junction, there's a sign board pointing towards Yelagiri.)

The roads are well punctuated with signboards in

English, and the roads especially the Chennai-Vaniyambadi stretch are excellent .( It is fairly safe, watch out for the occasional truck that changes lanes abruptly. The last petrol pump is after you turn left at Ponneri, a little before you start on the ghat section. There are no petrol pumps on the hills.

There are 14 hairpin bends on the ghat road from Ponneri to Yelagiri and the road is pretty narrow so you can't actually park a car to enjoy t

he view except at some of the wider hairpin bends. Bike

s won't have this problem though.

By train

If you are coming by train from Bangalore, Che

nnai or Coimbatore you have to get down at Jolar

pettai Junction.

Public transport

If you prefer to take public transport, buse

s come from Thirupattur and Jolarpet. You can take a taxi also from these places. You can negotiate for about 350 INR (2005) to drop you in Yelagiri Hills from Jolarpettai Junction.

Things to remember

Please note there are no petrol stations in Yelagiri, thus you have to fillup the tank at the last available petrol station in the plains (howeve

r, try to avoid HP petrol bunk in Poneri because they don't give pure petrol). Except for a few tire changers there are no vehicle repair shops in the hills.

Also, please take your first-aid kit along with your regular medicines, if any, with you. There is a government primary health centre, and a private clinic (in which the doctor is from CMC vellore). The nearest health centre is in Tirupattur.

you can see

There are 14 hair pin bends named with T

amil Poets(Pari Valivu, Ori Valivu, Kamban Valivu etc...) those leads to Yellagiri Hills. There is a sort of an observatory, after 12th bend with a telescope pointing towards the plains. It is difficult to park a car here owing to the narrow roads. Bikes should be fine.

On the way to the hills, you can see lots of small animals like monkeys, ox, goats, etc. Do not feed these animals as they can be dangerous. Don't forget to carry binoculars with you.

Don Bosco Centre, , Yellagiri Hills, Fr. Guezou, w ho is the founder of this Don Bosco Center has come from France and has been helping the poor people for many years. This center helps the poor and illterate youth to identify their future by providing IT ed ucation. They have the IGNOU Study center, IT Training Center and Software Development Center.

YOU can do

Trekking

  • Swami Malai, (not to be confused with the town of Swamimalai, near Kumbakonam) the highest peak, soaring to 4,338 ft from Mangalam, a hamlet at its base, takes the cake. Its an easy climb of about an hour with infrequent breaks (about a 1000 foot climb). Smaller peaks like Javadi Hills, Palamathi Hills and others are an easier climb. Start early though and be back before 9AM, for once the sun climbs up it can get rather uncomfortable.

  • Jalagamparai Waterfalls - Jalagamparai waterfalls are a 5 km trek from Yelagiri downhill. Its a tough trek, but the view from the sides of the mountain, of the valley, is truly rewarding. April probably is not a good time to visit the falls, as there is no water this time of the year. Recently (May 2007) there was no water in the falls. A tea shop owner said that there has been no water in this falls for the past 5 years. The tourist taxi operator may give you false information that recently there were some rain in this area and there may be water in the falls. His objective is to get money for the number of kilometers he runs the vehicle and not tourists' interest and pleasure. Just check this with somebody before you make a trip to this place. Otherwise it is a wasted trip. Especially if you go in the hot sun between 10AM to 12:30AM you will get headache. At the same time if one is interested in seeing the villages and the green pastures it may be fine. Next to the falls there is a temple at the top.
  • Uphill for 4km can be fun when in groups. Don’t forget to carry water, you will not find a drop of water to drink once you reach the hilltop. You can see the clouds touching the lush green hills in early morning- an amazing sight. Make sure you wear sneakers as the trek can be a treacherous climb. You can hire locals from the village to help you as guide on your trek for around Rs 300. It takes 2-3 hrs to climb the top of the hill, depending on your speed and agility. It is suggested to take frequent pit stops and enjoy the greenery. You can follow a radio tower beyond the Samaritan School on the hill top as you ascend- you can also follow the pathway laid by locals to guide your way up. Once you reach the top, you will see a small temple near the radio tower. Legend claims that the god in the temple saves people from being attacked by bears and evil spirits. You can climb a huge rock near the tower with the help of an iron ladder to take a breathtaking view of the valley beneath, nestled between the lush green forest and mountains- a true nature lover's paradise. You can find a few shortcuts routes downhill-- true trekkers can try out these.

Boating on Punganur Lake

  • This is an artificial lake, excavated in an area of 57 sq meters. The Elagiri Hills Development and Tourism Promotion Society runs the Boat Club, with pedaling and rowing boats. There is a newly laid flori cultural garden with a pathway along the bund with a panoramic view of the lake on one side and the garden on the other. A connecting bridge leads the pathway around the lake. The pathway around the lake is particularly good for birding. There is also a small watch tower constructed next to a tree which can be climbed. As of May 2007, this lake is very stinky with many dead fish.

Science / Educational

  • Vainu Bappu Solar Observatory (Elagiri): One of the largest solar observatories, it is situated in Kavalur, located 35 km from Thiruppathur, near Yelagiri. Prior permission is required to visit this observatory.thht
  • Farm visits: Rose farms provide an interesting detour.

For Kids:

  • A well laid out park on a 6 acre land adjacent to the lake, is established with varieties of children's play areas installed within the park. There is also a small zoo. But no animals could be seen there in January 2006.

For Everyone:

  • There is a "KODAI VIZHA ground" which is a lovely ground with beautiful paths for walking. This is now be updated [May 08] to the Nature park . A lovely 10 acre campus with an artificial fall, an aquarium, musical fountain in the evenings and amazing landscaping. This is a must see for all!

This is now complete and has 2 shows in musical fountain 7PM and 8PM. Very nice with gallery like setup and playing some 4 songs each in Hindi & Tamil.

The latest addition is the Nilavoor lake - more of a pond, with a few boats. Dont miss the ancient hero stines featured in the ancient temple - each of an archer pointing towards the 4 directions.

More to come - A botanical garden oer 10 acres in Pallakaniyur 0 about 4 km from the bus stand. Also , a 50 acre golf course is on the cards , waiting to know when this will see the light of day.
